Your path to the summit: 3 professional tips for your ski tour to the Wildspitze

Majestic, crowned with ice and, at 3,770 metres, the undisputed highlight of North Tyrol: the Wildspitze is the dream destination for every ski tourer in the Pitz Valley. Once you have stood at the summit cross and let your gaze wander over the Alps, you will never forget this moment. But beware: a high-altitude tour of this calibre demands respect and thorough preparation. To ensure your ascent is a success, we have teamed up with the experts from PEAKX experiences Checked out the three most important tips for safely reaching the summit.
Successful ski tourers stand at the summit cross of the Wildspitze (3,770 m) in the Pitztal valley and enjoy the panoramic view over the Ötztal Alps.

1. Acclimatisation & preparation: Do not underestimate the altitude!
The Wildspitze peaks at just under 4,000 metres. At this altitude, the air is noticeably thinner and your body has to work extremely hard.

Our tip: Do not plan the Wildspitze as the first tour of your holiday. In the days before, do an „acclimatisation tour“ at over 3,000 metres (for example, on the Suchtkogel). This will allow your body to get used to the lack of oxygen and you will have the necessary energy reserves on the day of the summit to really enjoy the tour.

2. Tour planning: Your strategic check (3×3 method)
Professional planning always considers the interplay between conditions, terrain and people.

Conditions & weather: Don't just check the avalanche report, but also take a close look at the wind speeds at the summit.

Terrain: The route across the Taschachferner glacier leads through glacier terrain – knowledge of crevasses is essential for survival here.

The human factor: Be honest with yourself. Do you have the fitness and technique for the steep summit ridge? Only if all three factors give the green light should you set off.

3. Time management: Why you need to get up early in spring
In spring, time is your most important safety factor. The strong sun causes the snow to warm up extremely quickly during the day. This increases the risk of avalanches (wet snow) and makes the route out of the Taschachtal valley dangerous.

Our tip: Start as early as possible, ideally with the first glacier lift! Your goal should be to have the descent under your belt before the midday sun reaches its full strength. Strict time management will ensure that you arrive back in the valley safely in stable conditions.

The professional tip: Go with a ski guide A high-altitude ski tour to the Wildspitze is no ordinary ski trip. The combination of crevasses, orientation and rope techniques at the summit requires real expert knowledge. If you want to keep your mind free for the experience and are looking for maximum safety, you should join a state-certified ski guide.
