Your way to the summit: 3 expert tips for your ski tour on the Wildspitze

Acclimatisation, route planning, time management: what matters on a high-alpine ski tour to the Wildspitze – and why you should tackle this summit with a ski guide.

Majestic, crowned with ice and, at 3,768 metres, the highest mountain in North Tyrol: the Wildspitze is the dream destination of many ski tourers in the Pitztal. Anyone who has stood at the summit cross and let their gaze wander across the Alps will not forget that moment in a hurry.

But beware: a high-alpine tour in this league requires respect and thorough preparation. To help your ascent succeed, we have put together the three most important tips for your tour with the experts from PEAKX experiences.

1. Acclimatisation & preparation: do not underestimate the altitude

At almost 3,800 metres, the Wildspitze is at an altitude where the air is noticeably thinner – your body has to work very hard here.

Our tip: do not plan the Wildspitze as the first tour of your holiday. In the days before, do an acclimatisation tour above 3,000 metres, for example to the Suchtkogel. This way your body gets used to the lower oxygen content and on summit day you have the strength reserves you need to really enjoy the tour.

2. Route planning: your check using the 3×3 method

Good planning always looks at the interplay of conditions, terrain and people:

  • Conditions & weather: do not just check the avalanche bulletin, but also look closely at the wind speeds on the summit.
  • Terrain: the route via the Taschachferner crosses glacier terrain – knowledge of crevasses is vital here.
  • The human factor: be honest with yourself. Do you have the fitness and technique for the steep summit ridge?

Only set off if all three factors give you the “green light”.

3. Time management: why you need to set off early in spring

In spring, time is your most important safety factor. The strong sun warms up the snow very quickly during the day. This increases the risk of wet-snow avalanches and makes the way out of the Taschach valley dangerous.

Our tip: start as early as possible, ideally with the first glacier lift. Your goal should be to have the descent behind you before the midday sun reaches full strength. Tight time management helps you get back safely to the valley in stable conditions.

The expert tip: go with a ski guide

A high-alpine ski tour on the Wildspitze is not an ordinary ski outing. The combination of crevasses, orientation and rope technique at the summit requires real expertise. If you want to keep your head free for the experience and are looking for more safety, join a state-certified ski guide.

The ski touring specialists at PEAKX experiences or the Pitztal mountain guides accompany you with all their experience to the highest peak in North Tyrol. There you will find the guided tours to the Wildspitze and can book your date.
